Physics

Aims

  • To share with students a sense of curiosity and wonder about the universe
  • To help students appreciate the profound impact of physics and engineering on all our lives
  • To support each student’s education; helping him realise his full potential
  • To encourage the skills of critical thinking and problem solving
  • To give students the chance to become familiar with modern equipment and the use of ICT in physics and engineering

As a department we believe that effective teaching makes the most of modern resources and techniques without neglecting traditional virtues of clarity of exposition. Similarly pupils can only appreciate the excitement of modern ideas in such areas as particle physics and cosmology if they have developed a firm understanding of the foundations of the subject. The department seeks to maintain an effective balance between pure physics and its application in such areas as engineering and telecommunications.

We are proud of the strength of the department as evidenced by examination results, high uptake in the sixth form, the large numbers choosing to study physics, natural sciences or engineering at university, success in the British Physics Olympiad and the good number of students obtaining places at Oxford and Cambridge. Ultimately, however, we will have succeeded if we have left our pupils with a life-long interest in the subject and with an attitude of informed enquiry.
