Music

The Music Department plays an important role within the curriculum but is also one of the largest extra curricular activities at the RGS. The school boasts a wide range of orchestras, choirs, bands and other ensembles and has an extremely high reputation for the quality of its music making. There is a full and wide ranging programme of concerts every term and the boys present monthly public concerts in Guildford in addition to their busy schedule of performances within school.  The music department occasionally links with other schools to perform large scale works and it also has an important role to play in forging links between the school and the local community.

All third boys in years 7 – 9 are taught music in class, it is a popular GCSE subject and boys who select the subject at A level often go on to University to continue their studies.

Singing is considered an important part of a young boy’s experience of music and in year 7 all boys receive weekly singing lessons in addition to their other studies which  focus on the three areas of musical study highlighted by the National Curriculum; listening, performing and composing.

Many boys study instruments at the school and there is a team of 22 visiting teachers who offer expert tuition in all orchestral instruments. Music scholarships are available and there are nearly forty music scholars at the school.
