George Abbot

A former Archbishop of Canterbury, GEORGE ABBOT, was an Old Boy who attended the school up until the age of sixteen. He took his B.A. at Balliol, Oxford, in 1582, and in 1583 became a Provisional Fellow of his college. In 1599 he joined the Deanery of Winchester, and in 1609 was appointed Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield by King James I. He was created Archbishop of Canterbury in 1610, and died on the 4th August 1633 at the age of 71.
