English

Today, we live in a world dominated by the media.  In this world, it is vital to think critically about what you see and hear and to consider carefully how you present yourself to those around you.  Whether focussing on English Language or Literature, our main aim is to equip our pupils with the skills necessary to succeed in such an environment.

English at the RGS is, therefore, concerned with Culture, Creativity and Communication. Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening are the core skills developed in English classes throughout the first three years of study and are continued in years four and five as pupils prepare for examination in both English and English Literature at GCSE (AQA Specification A).  Sixth Form Advanced Level English Literature (OCR) develops skills of analytical close-reading of texts; a developed awareness of literary discourses and representations across periods and genres; and a considered appreciation of reading practices.

Beyond the classroom, pupils are given the opportunity to develop the skills that they have acquired through a number of clubs and societies under the aegis of the Department.  The English Society is our main vehicle for this and is open to the Fourth Form and above.  The Society offers opportunities for debating, public-speaking and critical discussion in addition to theatre trips and the annual Burns’ Night Dinner.

English is very popular among the boys and this is, no doubt, due to the quality of the teaching, which is of the highest calibre throughout and enables our pupils to gain some of the best examination results in the country.

This, however, is not our overriding aim; we want to produce articulate, literate and creative young men who are able to think critically about the world around them and communicate effectively within it.
