The Economics Department embraces the challenge of bringing a subject that dominates our media, political debate and personal wellbeing from its many disparate sources in to a
manageable framework built upon theoretical understanding. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of economic philosophies and be trained to use them in analysing and understanding the fundamental economic problem; unlimited wants in the context of finite resources. This is most powerfully taught in our study of the developing world and the policy choices that face us in improving the lives of whole populations. In China alone 800 million people have been raised above the poverty line in the last 15 years and we seek to understand the mechanisms, costs and benefits of such change.
The teachers bring a wide variety of experience to the department and all avenues of enthusiasm are encouraged. Economics has a high level of continuance in to the Upper Sixth based upon the genuine interest that it fosters in the students’ work. This is followed by a large number of students taking Economics at a wide range of universities. It is our hope that many future politicians, business leaders and decision makers will base their judgments upon their ability to analyse the world around them, the true gift of Economics.
