Biology

Aims

  • To develop an interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including an interest in further study and careers in the subject.
  • To appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.
  • To develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works.
  • To develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other.

The biological sciences encompass the immense diversity of living organisms from viruses to mammals and include the study of systems from the molecular level to tropical rainforests.

Biology is a modern science and knowledge at all levels is increasing rapidly so that the courses on offer today bear little resemblance to those a few years ago. Most of these important advances are covered in both our IGCSE and A level course.

The department is proud of its success in public examinations and many of our A level students have had notable success in the British Biology Olympiad. A large proportion of the students studying A level go on to gain places to study Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science at university whilst others go on to study Natural Sciences, Biochemistry

Pupils can access further information about the IGCSE and A level courses as well as many of the presentations used via remote access and Teaching Resources (T:\Academic\Biology)
