Pounding the Boards
Categories: General News
On Friday 26th April our cohort of AS Drama and Theatre students performed a 25 minute extract from A Butcher of Distinction by Rob Hayes along with a self chosen monologue each for an external examiner. This “one chance only performance” is worth 60% of their AS qualification and can be an intense and stressful experience. It was a wonderful chance for the boys to really demonstrate their ability to sustain subtle and demanding acting roles whilst appearing to remain cool and indeed relishing the pressure of the evening!
Thomas Hosking, Alex Pusey and Benedict Philipp were absolutely fantastic in not only drawing us into the frighteningly tense world of the play but creating clearly etched and imaginative characterisations for their respective roles. Teddy, the brutal “East End” gangster who is casually flippant towards the use and abuse of his “boys” was chillingly and believably portrayed by Thomas. Alexander developed a nervous schizophrenia for the role of Hartley, expertly controlling the delivery of lines to go from wit and word play one minute to the dark menace of the psychopath the next. Benedict Philipp playing Hugo, the rather hapless younger twin, who suffers terribly at Teddy’s behest, was incredibly moving at points in the play contrasting superbly with his apparent innocence and lack of guile at the start of the play and his focused white-hot revenge at the end.
The boys’ monologues were equally well executed; Benedict choosing to play a character called “He” from Leonid Andreyev’s Expressionistic play He Who Gets Slapped, Thomas playing Morgan Evans from The Corn is Green by Emlyn Williams and Alexander playing Jimmy Porter from Look Back in Anger by John Osborne.
My thanks must go to the audience, made up of parents, staff, peers (several from GHS) and those with a strong interest in drama, who were extremely important in creating a supportive, friendly atmosphere for this significant event.

Thanks to everyone involved in this year’s Charity Day. I am pleased to report that we raised nearly £6,500.
School Concert
Categories: General News
This year's School Concert in Holy Trinity was a triumph for all concerned. The musicianship was of an extraordinary standard. Eric Foster gave a virtuoso performance of Constant Lambert’s Rio Grande ably supported by the School Choir and the Parents’ Choir. The rendition of Carnival 2, Peter White’s new take on Saint- Saens Carnival of the Animals was a revelation, not just for the quality of the composition but also for the standard of piano playing on display from RGS boys.
Nepal Day cometh
Categories: General News
Tuesday 19 March is the third annual Nepal Day, when the RGS celebrates our British Council Partnership with two Nepali schools in Besisahar. The aim of the day is to promote awareness of the Nepal Partnership rather than fundraising, however we ask every pupil to donate £1 to the Alex Ewart Fund and wear a funky tie. All boys should come in school uniform but wear the most entertaining tie they can and there will be a prize for the best tie. On the day there will be a full assembly explaining the partnership and the rules of Kabaddi. At lunchtime the boys will get top experience Nepalese cuisine, followed by a staff Kabaddi match and an inter-house competition for the boys to watch on the AWTA.
Lord of the Flies

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Lord of the Flies, this year’s in house production for our younger RGS boys. Max goes States-side
Categories: General News
As runner-up in the Film Category of the first 9/11 National Schools Competition, Max Beech of 5A joined the five other category winners on a visit to New York in September to mark the eleventh anniversary of the terror attacks.
The competition, organised by the educational charity 9/11 London Project, had required British students to submit essays or short films tackling the question “How did 9/11 change the World?” Max entered after hearing about the competition from his RS teacher Mrs Suenson-Taylor.
During their visit the six winners toured the Tribute WTC Visitor Centre at Ground Zero and Memorial Plaza, met Rudy Giuliani New York Mayor at the time of the 9/11 attacks and attended a local school ceremony commemorating the anniversary.
The Scottish Play

On Monday 15 October, eighteen RGS boys and three girls from Tormead School performed Macbeth, abridged to a thirty minute version, as part of this year's Shakespeare Schools Festival at the Electric Theatre, Guildford. The company were absolutely stunning both in terms of their commitment and attitude but especially this year for the sheer professional quality of acting ability demonstrated. All credit has to go to the boys and girls for their huge input of time and effort during a very short rehearsal period. The company were highly commended in the appraisal at the end of the evening for the accomplished performances, the inventive staging of scenes and the assured ensemble playing in creating the madness and violence of the play. The U15 tennis team returned victorious after yesterday’s Surrey Schools League Finals at Reed’s School. Having battled through a very tight semi-final encounter against King’s College School, Wimbledon, the RGS team faced Weydon – the team who beat them in last year’s final. The boys played some magnificent tennis, conducted themselves in a sporting and fair manner and showed commendable commitment and determination. After a whole day’s tennis the title boiled down to one final set: RGS first pair, Marcus Solarz-Hendriks and Ben Baker against the Weydon first pair. RGS stormed to a commanding 4-0 lead but Weydon changed tactics and clawed their way back to 5-5. In a very tense last few games, with some extraordinarily long rallies, Ben and Marcus finally wore down the Weydon defences and won an extremely hard fought match 7-5. Congratulations to the whole team.

Music from Mozart and Haydn to the inevitable Palladio by Karl Jenkins were presented along with a rare performance of the Elephant on a green electric double bass.

There were guided tours of Big School (one of the original classrooms) and the famous Chained Library, which is one of very few left in the country. We welcomed over 200 people through the doors during the afternoon.
Cream Teas were enjoyed in School Room (another of the original classrooms) where the visitors relaxed to the sound of RGS musicians. Due to the lovely weather some of the visitors ventured outside onto the Headmaster's lawn to enjoy the sunshine and soak up the atmosphere of the Old Building.
More success for RGS sailors.
