Pounding the Boards

Categories: General News

On Friday 26th April our cohort of AS Drama and Theatre students performed a 25 minute extract from A Butcher of Distinction by Rob Hayes along with a self chosen monologue each for an external examiner. This “one chance only performance” is worth 60% of their AS qualification and can be an intense and stressful experience. It was a wonderful chance for the boys to really demonstrate their ability to sustain subtle and demanding acting roles whilst appearing to remain cool and indeed relishing the pressure of the evening!

Thomas Hosking, Alex Pusey and Benedict Philipp were absolutely fantastic in not only drawing us into the frighteningly tense world of the play but creating clearly etched and imaginative characterisations for their respective roles. Teddy, the brutal “East End” gangster who is casually flippant towards the use and abuse of his “boys” was chillingly and believably portrayed by Thomas. Alexander developed a nervous schizophrenia for the role of Hartley, expertly controlling the delivery of lines to go from wit and word play one minute to the dark menace of the psychopath the next. Benedict Philipp playing Hugo, the rather hapless younger twin, who suffers terribly at Teddy’s behest, was incredibly moving at points in the play contrasting superbly with his apparent innocence and lack of guile at the start of the play and his focused white-hot revenge at the end.

The boys’ monologues were equally well executed; Benedict choosing to play a character called “He” from Leonid Andreyev’s Expressionistic play He Who Gets Slapped, Thomas playing Morgan Evans from The Corn is Green by Emlyn Williams and Alexander playing Jimmy Porter from Look Back in Anger by John Osborne.

My thanks must go to the audience, made up of parents, staff, peers (several from GHS) and those with a strong interest in drama, who were extremely important in creating a supportive, friendly atmosphere for this significant event.

GCSE Results

Categories: General News

The RGS has enjoyed another record-breaking year at GCSE with students achieving an outstanding set of results.  From the 100% pass rate, an astonishing 90 students achieved a clean set of A* and A grades.  Even more impressively, 24 students celebrated straight A* grades in each of their subjects.

The Headmaster of the RGS, Dr Jon Cox, commented on the School’s excellent GCSE examination results: “The boys have achieved the very highest standards in each of their subjects and it is particularly notable that of the 138 students who sat Mathematics IGCSE every single student achieved an A* or A grade: 118 gained A* grades and 20 A grades.”

He also noted: “The fact that the boys achieved these results in a year in which there has been a fall in the proportion of GCSEs awarded an A*- C grade for the first time since the exams were introduced 24 years ago is all the more pleasing.  It is testament to the dedication of RGS boys and the quality of the teaching that the A*/A pass rate at the RGS was 92% at a time when the national A*/A pass rate was 22.4%.  For the boys to manage this while still immersing themselves so fully in the broader life of the School - whether it is in sport, music or drama - is all the more impressive.”

The media have highlighted the disparity in performance between the genders at GCSE level with girls consistently outperforming boys.  This year nationally 18.9% of boys' entries achieved an A* and A grade compared to 25.6% of girls' entries.  Dr Cox added: “It is a source of great pleasure that the RGS maintains its reputation as a flagship for single-sex education for boys and that the boys relish the opportunity to stretch themselves beyond the confines of the curriculum.  The boys take pride in fulfilling their potential and reaching the very highest standards academically.

The School enjoys close links with Guildford High School and the fact that so many families are celebrating excellent results for their sons and daughters is credit to the town of Guildford.”

The U15 tennis team returned victorious after yesterday’s Surrey Schools League Finals at Reed’s School. RGS stormed to a commanding 4-0 lead but Weydon changed tactics and clawed their way back to 5-5. In a very tense last few games, with some extraordinarily long rallies, Ben and Marcus finally wore down the Weydon defences and won an extremely hard fought match 7-5. Oxbridge Success Maintained

Categories: General News

At this time of year, the media is dominated by the annual fight for university places and it is clear that competition for places has never been more intense. The top courses at the top universities are heavily oversubscribed with talented applicants; the financial penalties in place mean the institutions have even less flexibility in terms of the number of places they can offer. It is in this light that the recent offers achieved by the Upper Sixth Form boys are all the more impressive.

In the latest round of Oxbridge applications, 34 boys were successful in securing offers (12 Oxford; 22 Cambridge).
Although Oxford and Cambridge remain the primary goal for many of the boys, the School is also delighted by the success of its students at other leading universities. Already this year, over 20 offers have been made by Durham and Bristol and 15 by Imperial. Other popular destinations include Exeter, Nottingham, Warwick, Bath, UCL and Leeds.

Congratulations to the RGS Target 2.0 team of Upper Sixth Economists who beat teams from the City of London Freeman’s School, Guildford High, Langley Grammar and three others to win the southern heat of the competition. It is one of the most tightly contested groups but the team presented brilliantly to the judging panel from the Bank of England. Their recommendation of a continuation of 0.5% interest rates and a commitment to stick to the £75 billion of Quantative Easing was well backed up by their research team of James Clements, Oli Sugg, Rian Campbell and Liam Cheek and intelligently communicated by the presentation team of Elliott ‘The Governor’ Doyle, Max Burgin, Will Beynon and Alex Makowski. Thanks to the group’s practice and coolness under pressure they dealt with the tough questioning with aplomb. A fantastic performance in the first competition of the year.

The semi final next term will pit the top 25 schools in the country against each other in five rounds, the winner from each group going to the final.

Community Open Day

On Saturday 15 May, on a lovely summer’s day, the RGS opened up the Old Building to the public. There were guided tours of Big School (one of the original classrooms) and the famous Chained Library, which is one of very few left in the country. We welcomed over 200 people through the doors during the afternoon.

Cream Teas were enjoyed in School Room (another of the original classrooms) where the visitors relaxed to the sound of RGS musicians. Due to the lovely weather some of the visitors ventured outside onto the Headmaster's lawn to enjoy the sunshine and soak up the atmosphere of the Old Building.
