Oxbridge Success Maintained

At this time of year, the media is dominated by the annual fight for university places and it is clear that competition for places has never been more intense. The top courses at the top universities are heavily oversubscribed with talented applicants; the financial penalties in place mean the institutions have even less flexibility in terms of the number of places they can offer. It is in this light that the recent offers achieved by the Upper Sixth Form boys are all the more impressive.

In the latest round of Oxbridge applications, 34 boys were successful in securing offers (12 Oxford; 22 Cambridge).

Although Oxford and Cambridge remain the primary goal for many of the boys, the School is also delighted by the success of its students at other leading universities. Already this year, over 20 offers have been made by Durham and Bristol and 15 by Imperial. Other popular destinations include Exeter, Nottingham, Warwick, Bath, UCL and Leeds.

Congratulations to the RGS Target 2.0 team of Upper Sixth Economists who beat teams from the City of London Freeman’s School, Guildford High, Langley Grammar and three others to win the southern heat of the competition. It is one of the most tightly contested groups but the team presented brilliantly to the judging panel from the Bank of England. Their recommendation of a continuation of 0.5% interest rates and a commitment to stick to the £75 billion of Quantative Easing was well backed up by their research team of James Clements, Oli Sugg, Rian Campbell and Liam Cheek and intelligently communicated by the presentation team of Elliott ‘The Governor’ Doyle, Max Burgin, Will Beynon and Alex Makowski. Thanks to the group’s practice and coolness under pressure they dealt with the tough questioning with aplomb.
